Who Am I To Tell You Anything?

I’m not special. I’m broken. Just. Like. You.

I’ve been playing music since secondary school. I quit my day job to take our first tour with my band While She Sleeps in 2006 and haven’t stopped since that day. I’ve written and produced six studio albums and one EP, including two Top 10 records, one charting in the UK and another in Germany. My band and I have toured the planet for over 20 years with artists such as Bring Me The Horizon, Architects, In Flames, Parkway Drive, and Bullet For My Valentine, to name a few. I’ve been on the covers of magazines, we’ve won awards, and I currently have two signature guitars out, among other stereotypical “rock star” accolades and achievements.

All of this sounds like I’m some kind of professional. Like I’m “the real deal.” Like I’ve “made it.” And in some regard, depending on your vantage point, I guess I am the real deal, and I have made it. But not in the way we usually perceive.

I’ve never had a guitar lesson. I don’t know an ounce of music theory.

Yet somehow, on paper, it seems like I’ve achieved all my dreams, and probably a lot of yours too, and I’m living them. But I know for a fact it’s all a façade. It’s not real. It’s a perception shaped by how we present our success to the world over time, crafting an image for others to project their own idea of success onto.

I’m not special. Either we’re all special, or no one is. Either everything is sacred, or nothing is. Both are reasonable spiritual positions depending on your vantage point.

Anyone who’s achieved what they set out to do knows the feeling. You arrive at your dream’s doorstep, and it’s a shocking wake up call. You realise everyone you ever looked up to, idolised, worshipped, or followed didn’t even exist.

You assigned that power to them. It wasn’t real.

Once I realised I was now in the same position as the people I used to idolise, that I had become the one people looked up to, I started to feel like a phoney. Like a fake. Something wasn’t right. I remembered how big I made my inspirations. I made them larger than life in my mind. So does that mean people now see me the same way? That can’t be. I’m just little old me doing what I’ve always done. Little old me who knows fuck all. Seeing me in that same “larger than life” way would be a mistake.

Then it hit me.

It’s all a fucking game.

NO ONE is “gifted”

NO ONE is “famous”

NO ONE is “successful”

NO ONE is “God’s favourite”

NO ONE is above ANYONE

How is it that me, Sean, from Renishaw, someone who had a rough upbringing, failed school and college, has never had a guitar lesson, knows nothing about making music “properly,” and did enough drugs and drink to sink a ship, is now being idolised? On paper, it makes no sense.

I have nothing that you don’t. I never did. What, you think “God” gifted me some special power but skipped you? Lol. That’s bollocks. I’m a straight up idiot. The only thing I had was blind passion and drive, regardless of the logistics of how to actually get what I wanted. I just ran with it. I have zero musical knowledge. I still don’t.

What this masterclass is really about

This course is about exposing myself and stripping away any preconceived ideas of who I am as a “musician,” so you can see in real time how not special I really am. It’s not some postured, polished front. I’m not here pretending to be some musical genius. Well, maybe a little bit of pretending. Gotta look cool. I’m far from that.

This isn’t a step by step guitar tutorial on how to sound like me. But by watching me work, by observing the real process behind what I do, you’ll quickly gain the inspiration and clarity to realise something.

You can do it too.

Not because I’m telling you, but because you’ll see how simple my mind works and how accessible creativity really is. We all have an internal compass screaming to be expressed. We just need the courage to follow it. That’s it.

The logistics and technicalities of getting to where you want to be will sort themselves out. Trust me. The power governing the real magic in life knows more than you, but is you at the same time.

All you need to do is follow that feeling you already know is there. How many more cheesy inspirational talks, podcasts, or YouTube videos do you need before you just start? Even me saying this now probably won’t make it happen, and it’s getting old hearing people talk as if they have access to some universal secret knowledge you don’t already possess within you. But sometimes a push is necessary. That’s where I come in.

Ask yourself this

Have you ever stopped and wondered who or what is governing the body?

Yes, we consciously manage our mental and physical health, but compared to the intelligence running in the background, our conscious efforts are cumbersome at best.

You eat food and turn it into a human.

Who or what has the power to turn a banana into a human? What word would you use for that power? And who has access to it? Or is it not separate from you?

When you feel pleasure, how do you command your glands to secrete those chemicals? Better yet, what even are those chemicals if we strip away the words we use to describe them?

Do you personally circulate your blood? Are you doing that? Do you tell your white blood cells when to fight? How do you communicate that to them?

Or is something within you already doing all of this, something that is you, and yet much greater than you?

You don’t need my “course” to realise this. I am not a guru, and I don’t have access to some hidden level of consciousness you can’t reach without me. I’m just another aperture of inspiration, a mirror to unlock something that’s already inside you.

And honestly?

No one can truly explain this. No one can sell it inside a course. That’s why this course, at its core, is for entertainment purposes only. To show you how simple it really is. To break the illusion. To drop the pedestal. To remind you of what’s already yours.

We are all children of the universe.

What this course is, and more importantly, what it is not

I have been very open my entire career about not trying to be something we aren’t. And what I definitely am not is a “professional” musician. In the eyes of social norms, hierarchy standards, and societal judgement, sure, I’m a professional. But what we conjure up in our minds as what a professional even is doesn’t add up to the reality of that title once it’s socially earned.

In the eyes of a basic human, I am just that. A human.

This course is about showing you who I really am, despite all of my fancy online accolades and achievements. It’s all the by product of being completely myself, which at the very least is a confused, scared young boy trapped in a man’s body trying to make sense of this world.

I’m here to show you to stop idolising me and others as if we have something you don’t. We really, really don’t. It’s all a façade that you make up in your mind. You glorify others over yourself as if there are better people than you.

It’s all bullshit.

So as much as I do “teach” you things within the course, it’s better to think of it as a masterclass for entertainment. The entire inspiration for this project was for the user to embody inspiration simply through osmosis and absorption, so you can see that I’m not “all that.” That it’s not all that to make music, and it’s not some magical thing reserved only for gifted individuals.

So please don’t think you’re buying a step by step guide on how to play guitar like me and once finished you’ll be like me. No.

I am showing you how I do things for you to absorb my energy and, to some degree, my way of thinking. Watch my style of moving to inspire you to then vibrate your way and go on to make meaningful music to you, no longer needing this course.

You’re joining me for 10+  hours to see how I do things. Thus, in turn, I have endowed the course with the intention that it will inspire you on some level to go create something yourself without the stupid hierarchical block we create for ourselves.

It’s not a step by step thing.
